“My initial experience with Chris comes from taking Biophysical Techniques and Applications (BIOC 3202) at Carleton University in the fall semester of 2014. Right from the start, his passion for teaching was made particularly evident by the sheer amount of effort he invested in his preparation of every single lecture. Throughout the course, Chris not only presented the course material in an extremely comprehensive way, but also went above and beyond by posting extra material that was directly related to the course, as well as posting lecture recordings. Chris made it easy for us to understand concepts in the course material that would otherwise have been too abstract, by actually having us participate in classroom demonstrations. One time, he picked students to play the roles of specific atoms in a vibrating molecule, holding slinkies, so that we would better grasp the concept of vibrational spectroscopy. “Shortly before the beginning of the Fall 2006 semester, we lost a veteran lab coordinator who had been running the BIOC 4001 (Methods in Biochemistry) labs single handedly for over 20 years. A replacement coordinator was found at the last minute, but ultimately no new lab coordinator with limited experience could hope to take over these duties, seamlessly, on such short notice. Given his prior 2 years of experience as a BIOC 4001 teaching assistant, Chris, now in his 3rd year and the senior TA, stepped up and effectively filled a dual-role of helping to train and guide the replacement coordinator, and continuing his expected duties of presenting lab talks to the students before the experiments began, supervising students during their experiments, holding office hours, and grading lab reports. Many of the students in this class were students gearing up to take the MCATs who needed a good understanding of biochemistry without getting bogged down in too much detail. This would be a daunting task for any professor. How do I synthesize all the essential ideas of Biochemistry into a one semester course? Chris found a way. He had engaging lectures where he found the golden mean between giving the students enough information and keeping the course moving. Chris had a way of making an hour and fifteen minute lecture fly by, a skill that makes for a great professor. He had a way of getting the students to an answer without just giving it to them unless they absolutely couldn’t figure out the answer. Chris also has a strong commitment to his students. This was evident in the night-time review sessions he would conduct after exams to make sure that we understood the things we missed before moving onto the next unit of material. On a more personal note, Chris has been there for me on multiple occasions. During finals week I had a medical procedure done which took me out of commission for a few days. Not only was Chris willing to let me move my final, but his genuine compassion and well wishes meant a lot to me during an already difficult finals week. His genuine support did not end once our time in class ended, but as the year went on he always asked me how everything was going and how my MCAT studying was going. “In the organic chemistry lab and biochemistry research lab, it quickly became evident that I was a biology major whose last advanced chemistry course was taken 2 years prior. Certainly, I was frustrated in myself, but Dr. Dieni reinstalled my confidence, chemistry knowledge, and lab technique – which I needed to succeed that semester. In my struggles, Dr. Dieni remained patient and supportive in his instruction. Dr. Dieni was always available and willing to break down difficult biochemical concepts in the most clear and articulate manner. Dr. Dieni challenged our class and research team to surpass previous limits and achieve our potential, while rewarding our hard work and effort. His patient, supportive, and approachable teaching style fostered a comfortable learning environment which motivated me to ask thoughtful questions and integrate related concepts.
Dr. Dieni would frequently go above and beyond making himself available outside of required times. As the RA of the campus house that contained 10/12 basketball players, it truly meant a lot when Dr. Dieni allowed me to support my residents. Dr. Dieni rearranged his schedule and stayed late additional days as we conducted research, so that I could attend the basketball team’s playoff game. Also, Dr. Dieni provided elaborate explanations on our lab result sheets, often staying past normal hours. When I did not receive the correct melting point for a compound. Dr. Dieni stayed after lab with me to improve my technique, then we ran the melting point again. As carefully measured the melting point with precession, I received the accurate value. Dr. Dieni taught me the invaluable lesson that the right way in life may require a little more time and care, but the additional effort will show in the outcome.
Dr. Dieni’s interactive teaching style catalyzed my research success (pun intended). Dr. Dieni prepared an extensive excel spread sheet with comprehensive formulas fostering timely and efficient research. Upon aggregating our tremendous results, Dr. Dieni continuously offered immediate feedback for the multiple revisions of my Celebration of Student Achievement poster, Dr. Dieni’s engaged mentorship enhanced my research outcomes and crafted valuable laboratory skills. Overall, Dr. Dieni’s positivity, knowledge, support, clarity, engagement, and passion made me excited for our nanotoxicology research and organic labs. Experiences with great professors, advisors, and mentors like Dr. Dieni makes the Ursinus experience so special.
